Facebook, one of the world’s leading social media, is rebranding by giving the term metaverse. Actually, the term metaverse was coined by Neal Stephenson in 1992 in his novel Snow Crash. The term refers to a virtual 3D world that contains avatars of real people, but it doesn’t really have a universally accepted definition. Metaverse can be said to be the internet that is rendered in 3D. Mark Zuckerberg describes the metaverse as a virtual environment that can not only be seen through the screen but can also be entered. In short, a metaverse is a set of virtual spaces where one can create and explore with other internet users who are not in the same space as that person.

The existence of the metaverse can help people do things virtually like online travel, try on digital clothes to buy, create and view art, etc. In the current situation, metaverse can help people who work from home where company employees can join together in a virtual office instead of seeing co-workers through a video call box. Metaverse is not only a project from Facebook but also other big techs companies like Microsoft, chipmaker Nvidia, Fortnite, Roblox Gucci, Coca-Cola, and Clinique. These companies create virtual worlds and environments in the metaverse that will help people to be able to teleport to different worlds from one company to another.

Many questions arise regarding this metaverse, one of which is whether the metaverse will replace the internet. Mark Zuckerberg describes the metaverse as the internet to be realized which is basically an enhanced version of the internet. By using the metaverse, people will get a different experience that is not found on a 2D web or application.
